Hold your breath and prepare to explore the astonishing underwater world of Madeira in a unique way. Freediving is one of the most thrilling experiences you can have in the sea. Unlike scuba diving, you don't have an air tank for breathing, so you rely only on holding your breath until you reemerge from the water. It becomes a form of relaxation once you learn how to control your mind and body in a nirvana-like state.
When freediving, you dive in complete silence. When there is no air tank spitting bubbles as you move beneath the surface, marine animals are not afraid of you, and they tend to get curious and approach their new visitor.
With a bit of training, everyone can learn how to trigger their mammalian dive reflex and hold their breath underwater with ease. Our SSI (Scuba Schools International) Freediving Basic course is your chance to experience this unique sensation on your own. You will be surprised by how much you are capable of.
Our professional instructor teaches you the necessary skills and knowledge to practice freediving in a safe and enjoyable way. Your lessons cover subjects such as the physiology of freediving, breathing, and effective finning techniques. You also learn about equipment, the importance of a diving buddy, dive planning, emergency management, and the marine environment.
The basic course lasts one day and takes place in our diving center, at the heart of Ponta de São Lourenço. It is an easily accessible dive spot just a few steps away from the shore. There, you can see different species of sea animals. Octopuses, cuttlefish, barracudas, stingrays, eagle rays, and moray eels are waiting just for you. Encounters with monk seals are also getting more frequent.
The course can be done all year round. Although some swimming skills are needed, you don’t need to be a good swimmer to try your first strokes in open water. It is a fantastic opportunity to challenge yourself while making new friends with a similar interest to yours: exploring a whole new world.
