1000 years of legend, history and culture
Shepherds claimed to have discovered the figure of the black Madonna in a cave in Montserrat in the 9th century, according to legend. Local religious figures discovered and removed the original carving, and the first church, followed by the monastery, was built in the 11th century. By the 12th century, word of Montserrat's miracles had traveled far and wide. As the monastic community grew, pilgrims from all over the world began to throng to the sacred mountain, as they continue to do today. The Virgin Monastery was created in 1025, repaired several times, devastated by Napoleon in 1811, and finally rebuilt by Catalan Modernist artists, including Gaudí himself, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A day outside of the city!
Our Montserrat and Wine Country Day Trips offer travelers of all ages and interests a well-rounded, all-inclusive day trip. The day begins with a guided tour of the magnificent Monastery of Montserrat, which is located 50 minutes west of Barcelona and stands at an unusual height of 725 meters / 2378 feet above sea level. Visitors will also have the chance to hear the famed Boys' Choir sing (please add and pay for this option when booking), visit the "Moreneta de Montserrat" (one of Europe's black Madonnas), and take a short walk to Santa Cova, where the black Madonna is supposed to have been discovered and rescued.
Explorers will next leave Montserrat for a great lunch of native Catalan country cuisine in a traditional restaurant near Montserrat's base, followed by a private field tour, guided visit, and three-product wine and cava tasting at one of the best boutique wineries in the area.
Our small-group day trips have a maximum of 2-8 people and are conducted by one of our entertaining and informative experts who will give you a thorough overview of Montserrat's history as well as the history of Catalunya. This Montserrat and Wine Country Day Trip is easily catered to both young and old visitors, to those with or without specific religious interest, and to both wine connoisseurs and wine “enthusiasts”. A truly fantastic and authentic day outside of the city during your visit to Barcelona!
