Why we love this tour
You'll explore the untouched Arctic nature in the best way possible - on backcountry skis!
- Snowy forests, lakes and magnificent views
- More adventurous way to explore local nature
- Backcountry skiing on a pristine snow powder
- Increased chances of spoting Aurora Borealis

Backcountry skiing is the best way to see pristine portions of the Arctic wilderness!
You will have the opportunity to explore some of the stunning scenery of Lapland on backcountry skis and leave your own trace in the thick snow where no one has gone before you, as your experienced guide will lead you away from Rovaniemi and directly into nature. The excursion is designed to give you an excellent chance to see the Northern Lights if they occur; your guide will take you up a hill or over wetlands in search of good views of the auroras to the north.
Off-piste skiing, also known as backcountry skiing, is a terrific opportunity to explore distant sections of Lapland that are blanketed in deep snow. Backcountry skiing, unlike alpine and cross-country skiing, which are both done on groomed paths, allows for a more adventurous journey through hilly terrains, woods, and lakes. Because the skis have a skin on them, you can go uphill and downhill without going too fast. It doesn't take much practice to get acclimated to the gear and skills for sliding in heavy snow, just like snowshoeing. Even for beginners, this makes it very comfortable and simple to use!
Your guide will choose a spot that not only meets the group's level and needs, but also gives you a good chance to see the Northern Lights if they occur. They will also give you safety guidelines and demonstrate several tactics for skiing on fresh snow. Your guide will light a fire to keep you warm, so refreshments and a traditional Finnish barbeque feast will be supplied halfway. They will also give you an excellent description of the Northern Lights and Lapland in general. This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn more about auroras, Arctic life, and wildlife in general.
This ski excursion lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes, including transportation from/to Rovaniemi, a BBQ snack around the fire, and, of course, time spent skiing in the woods (around 1h30 - 2h depending on your level). This excursion is a wonderful option for individuals who want to see the Northern Lights and are willing to take risks. The excursion will go on regardless of the weather; even if there is a decreased likelihood of seeing auroras, you will still have a fantastic skiing experience in the wilderness!
In all our excursions, our groups are limited to 8 people maximum. It it very important for us to provide you with the best experience as possible, and avoid mass tourism. This way, your guide will know you better and will be able to address all your needs and answer your questions. As we usually say: the smaller the group, the bigger the experience !
