This tour will take you out of Rovaniemi and into the Taiga forest, where you will be surrounded by breathtaking wildlife. You will discover the wonders of the Lapland forests with your guide, learning about the trees, plants, their qualities, and various creatures. You'll also learn how to make a fire with your surroundings and some other fundamental survival skills.
When you arrive at the start, you will be given a briefing on safety procedures and what to watch for. The Wilderness tour includes varying levels of difficulty depending on your skill; when you are picked up, your guide will discuss this with you and the best path will be selected between you.
This tour is also meant to be educational: your guide will share his or her expertise and enthusiasm for nature with you, as well as teach you about the secrets of Finnish nature and some basic survival techniques.
The tour is available all year, with different features for each season. You will be able to appreciate the Taiga forest at the most vibrant time of year in the summer. Delicious fruits abound in the undergrowth: blueberry, lingonberry, cranberry... Bears, wolves, lynx, wolverines, moose, reindeer, polar hares... all the arctic species that live in Lapland get a great feast. The woodlands are beginning to exhibit their lovely "ruska" colors: coppers, gold, auburn, and ocher adorn the leaves of the birches as a farewell to summer. Autumn is also an excellent season to discover and learn about the local shrubs and mushrooms. The tour is modified for the winter, and a separate description of our "Wilderness Survival - Winter" may be found in our Winter Tours area.
Halfway through the hike, refreshments and a traditional Finnish barbeque snack will be supplied, and your guide will light a fire to keep you warm. This is an excellent moment for your guide to demonstrate how to construct a fire in the manner of the natives. There will be no need for matches or lighters because your guide will utilize a flint&steel and natural components collected along the trip!
Our groups are limited to a maximum of 8 people on all of our excursions. It is critical for us to give you with the greatest possible experience while avoiding mass tourism. Your guide will get to know you better this way, and will be able to meet all of your needs and answer all of your questions. As we often say, the smaller the group, the greater the adventure!
MIDNIGHT SUN SPECIAL: The tour features an additional nighttime start in June and July (start at 21:00). You will hike with your guide through the beauty of Lapland environment, which will be enhanced by the midnight sun. Special attention will be given to this unique polar occurrence, its explanation, and scientific significance in relation to the Arctic Circle. Those of you who enjoy photography will appreciate the wonderful warm colors that the Midnight Sun provides!
