Explore Rovaniemi from a new perspective!
Before embarking for your sightseeing tour, your qualified canoe guide will teach you the fundamentals of canoeing and provide you with all necessary safety instructions during this activity. You'll learn how to use the paddles, how to travel on water and guide your canoe, and how to react if your canoe capsizes, among other things. You will start on very quiet waters, protected by islands, to get used to the canoe and the different techniques. Your guide will keep an eye on you at all times and will assist you if you require assistance.
Your guide will take you around Rovaniemi and the various tourist sights while you are paddling: the Arktikum Museum, Kemijoki, Ounasjoki, Ounasvaara, the Lumberjack bridge, the Rovaniemi beach, the church... They will share their knowledge of Rovaniemi's history, life in the Arctic, and the natural beauty that surrounds it with you. As you follow the river's flow, you'll pass through Kotisaari Island (former a bastion for lumberjacks), before arriving at the Rovaniemi Local Heritage Museum on the river's banks.
The museum visit will provide an opportunity to travel back in time and learn about life in a local farmhouse a century ago. The museum explores various aspects of traditional Lapland lives and trades such as salmon fishing, cattle husbandry, hunting, and forestry. The museum houses a diverse variety of relics and intriguing things, including one of the first Finnish bibles and a photography exhibition depicting Rovaniemi's history.
For those of you who are photographers, every minute of this tour is a terrific chance, so don't forget to bring your camera (but be careful around water!).
The tour lasts about 3 hours and 30 minutes, including transportation, canoeing and safety lectures, paddling time (about 1 hour and 30 minutes depending on your skill level), and a museum visit. Our groups are limited to a maximum of 8 people on all of our excursions. It is critical for us to give you with the greatest possible experience while avoiding mass tourism. Your guide will get to know you better this way, and will be able to meet all of your needs and answer all of your questions. As we often say, the smaller the group, the greater the adventure!
