In March 2021, a brand-new volcano bursted into life on the Reykjanes peninsula, between the airport and Reykjavik. Since then, thousands of Icelanders and visitors from all over the world have enjoyed the incredible sight of molten lava flowing through the valleys around Geldingadalir. Come see it as well!
Seltun Geothermal Area
On our way to Geldingadalir, we’ll first visit Seltun. In this geothermally active area, you’ll see bubbling hotpots and mud pools boiling in an almost alien landscape. The hot springs, sulfur smells and bright colors will captivate you!
Geldingadalir (Fagradalsfjall) eruption site
Let us take you on a tour of the eruption site to explore the freshest lava fields in the world. Our expert guides will explain how the eruption happened and how the volcano has changed the Icelandic landscape.
You’ll see the volcano’s crater and the enormous tongues of jet-black lava reaching across the horizon on this fascinating hiking expedition!
Gunnuhver Hot Springs & Valahnukamol
After exploring Geldingadalir, our next stop is the hot springs at Gunnuhver, another colorful steaming hot spring that sends clouds of vapor billowing high into the sky. There are deep mud pools here, and folklore stories tell of a witch who fell to her doom here, so watch where you walk!
Nearby, you’ll have a chance to walk along the towering sea cliffs of Valahnukamol, home to colonies of birds, where earlier volcanic lava flows met the Atlantic Ocean thousands of years ago.
The views are breathtaking in all directions, and you’ll see Reykjanesviti, the oldest lighthouse in Iceland, as well as Karlinn, an enormous 60-meter column of volcanic rock that stands just offshore.
Bridge Between Continents
Another tremendous force shaping Iceland is right at The Bridge Between Continents.
Iceland stands on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a globe-straddling geological fault line between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. These continents are slowly pulling apart at the same speed that your fingernails grow. Here you’ll be able to walk across a bridge from one continent to another in just a few steps!
Blue Lagoon (optional)
The last part of our tour is the most popular place of the whole country – the iconic Blue Lagoon. Here the milky sea waters contrast with black lava fields. If you want to join this part of the tour, please select “Tour with Blue Lagoon admission” option during booking process.
Here you can soak all your cares away in two beautiful hours at the Blue Lagoon SPA. It is a perfect way to reflect on an unforgettable day spent on the Reykjanes Peninsula. If you decide to add this experience to your itinerary, you can borrow swimming suit, slippers and bathrobes at the reception. Once entering the Blue Lagoon, you will receive a towel and electronic bracelet to open/close your locker and to pay for additional services and refreshments (please note that one welcome drink is already included in the comfort admission).
Geothermal seawaters at the Blue Lagoon are reach in silica, algae and various minerals. Even though whole bathing area is located outdoors, the temperature of the water kept between 37° and 40°C (98°-104°F) will make you feel comfortable.
The Reykjanes Volcano Tour gives you the chance to see Iceland at its wildest, where the “Land of Fire and Ice” is constantly changed by volcanic eruptions, glaciers and fierce winds.
