Sian Ka'an means "born from the sky" in Mayan, and spending time in this natural reserve truly feels like a gift from heaven.
This protected region is a feast for the senses, with infinite lengths of unspoiled wetlands that overlap with isolated coves and inlets, coral reefs, and mangrove forests. It is also one of the most important coastal breeding grounds in the Caribbean. Sian Ka'an is a UNESCO World Heritage site that has a unique status within the 'Man and the Biosphere' project, which aims to integrate local activities into protected areas through sustainable practices. The local economy, which is focused on fishing and tourism, has survived and grown because to the reserve's restrictions, which ensure sustainable activities and safeguard the coast from overdevelopment.
This provides visitors with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the reserve's wetlands. The local fishermen with whom we work will take you through the lagoons and mangrove forests as you travel south on the water through a truly pristine landscape, stopping at Boca Paila, an open cenote, to look for crocodiles, manatees, and the diverse birdlife that lives or migrates through the area. The fact that we avoid driving and instead travel by boat adds to the uniqueness of the experience.
The lagoon empties into Ascension Bay and the open ocean after this epic journey. Changes in sea color and boundless skies stretching out over the Caribbean will be noticeable. With luck, we'll also see some of the bay's resident sea turtles and local dolphins swimming in the wild. If weather conditions are good and the water is calm, we will snorkel on a stretch of the barrier reef system, which is home to thousands of aquatic species. If that wasn't enough, we will stop at a lovely sandbank known locally as "nature's swimming pool" to relax and swim in crystal-clear water before concluding our boat excursion. After an action-packed day, we are given a local lunch and time to unwind in Punta Allen.
