Make your way across the Solheimajokull glacier in a thrilling combination of ice climbing and glacier walking. Explore South Iceland with an active discovery, then and rest your arms at peaceful waterfalls on the way back to town.
From the designated meeting spot in Reykjavik, your guide picks you to drive you through the Icelandic landscape of green ridges and rocky canyons. Once you come to the foot of the glacier, you receive all technical equipment and safety information for a secure journey.
Set off through the Solheimajokull glacier's frozen blue, white, and clear formations. This glacier "tongue" falls from 300 meters (4265 ft) to 100 meters (328 ft) from the Myrdalsjokull. Take in the sweeping views of the mountains around you as you walk higher up the slope.
Along the way, the guide searches for an ideal climbing spot to set up. Throughout the years, glaciers are melting and refreezing in a cycle that constantly creates new forms. This means every year the scenery of a glacier is slightly different, and the crevasses and cracks are fresh ice walls.
After a short introduction, you pick up your ice axes and scramble your way up the solid sheet of ice. Your hand equipment helps you gain elevation, so don't worry whether or not you have climbing experience.
After having fun on the glacier, your guide drives you to marvel at two impressive waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. Both of these gorgeous falls tumble down from about 60 m (200 ft) high between rocky gorges. Make sure you bring your camera for these picture-perfect waterfalls.
Combining glacier walking, ice climbing, and sightseeing, experience and admire the nature of South Iceland in one active day tour.
