Discovering what lies below the Earth's surface is a spectacular experience. Entering the dark, silent underground passages of caves and caverns is like finding yourself in a different world.
Exploring caves - or "caving" - in Arrabida Natural Park exposes you to strange, amazing dripstone shapes that took millions of years to form. As you walk and crawl through mud slides and narrow passageways, your guide tells you how subterranean rivers and erosion created this magnificent underground feature.
On this journey, you also get the rare opportunity to learn from an absolute expert: Samuel Lopes, the first and only Portuguese speleologist (one who studies and explores caves) to have visited the largest cave in the world, Son Doong. Mr. Lopes almost always joins this tour.
We offer three levels to choose from. From beginners to advanced explorers, anyone can join this one-of-a-kind adventure.
For absolute beginners, this level provides basic knowledge of caving and environmental preservation in this unique environment. Following the theoretical lesson, we practice caving techniques, like moving through caves both horizontally and vertically.
The duration of this activity is 2 to 3 hours. We visit three cavities, which are holes or hollow areas and are smaller than a cave. Unlike the other two levels, this exploration does not involve the use of ropes.
Although it is best if you have experience before joining this level, beginners are also welcome. We will include some training outside before entering the cave.
The duration of this activity is between 3 and 5 hours, depending on your experience and which cave we visit. Level of difficulty also depends and can be between low to medium. This exploration includes the use of ropes for rappelling and climbing.
This level requires previous experience comparable to what we do at Level 2.
The duration of this activity is about 8 hours, depending on which cave we visit. Level of difficulty also depends and is between medium to high. We descend into the cave along large walls using ropes, and exit the cave at the end using the rope and various climbing techniques.
For this level especially, we recommend bringing snacks, food, and water.
