The "Sentiero Contrabbandieri" (Path of the Contrabbandieri (smugglers) is a road built into the side of rock face which used to provide a perfect escape for criminals. Nowadays, the route's exposed ledges make for a perfect via ferrata in the skies. This route on the west of Lake Garda travels along high vertical walls for a via ferrata challenge full of spectacular panoramic views.
When you meet your guide in Arco, a town just north of Lake Garda, you’ll receive a brief introduction and all the necessary equipment. You set off for an hour-long walk on the Old Ponale Road. First built in the mid-19th century, this path used to be the only connection between Lake Garda and the Ledro Valley. Today Ponale Road serves as a hiking and cycling path through stunning nature.
After the path, you then arrive at the ferrata's starting point to begin walking in the footsteps of old smugglers. Your guide ensures you tackle obstacles like ladders and wooden logs with the appropriate equipment. Navigating the steep ledges of the walls rewards you with sweeping views of Lake Garda. With blue waters below and giant green mountains around you, you may forget you’re scaling sheer vertical rock walls.
After about 4 hours of adventuring above the waters, you step back on flat land and make your way to the meeting point. You too can live life on the edge on this tough but wildly entertaining via ferrata. After hiking, climbing, and via ferrata, we can be sure you’ll be smuggling the memories all the way back home.
