Many know Spain as a fantastic country for growing and producing wine. Although far from the mainland, the Canary Islands are no exception. The lush slopes of the Tacoronte region boast rows and rows of grapevines, which create Tenerife’s award-winning reds. Hike through the area’s nature to the centuries-old Monje winery for a proper Canarian lunch and wine tasting.
After you've been picked up at your hotel, your guide drives you to Tacoronte to begin the trip. This region is one of the original nine kingdoms from when the Spanish empire conquered the island back in the 15th century. Learn about the town of the same name, the indigenous Guanche people, and the popular Malvasia grape as your guide leads you through the trail. Even though the first vines were planted in 1497, Tenerife’s wines became so popular in the 16th century that even Shakespeare praised them in his work.
The enjoyable two-hour route brings you closer to the coast to El Sauzal, where the Monje winery perches on the rolling hills. Since 1750 the Monje family has produced red, white, and rose wines with tradition and care. Enjoy an authentic three-course Canarian lunch as you sip wines made from the grapes Listán Negro, Negramoll, and more. The view of Mount Teide, the sprawling vineyards, and the bright ocean is just as spectacular as the wines themselves.
Enjoy a hike through the forested countryside of the Tacoronte region, then enjoy some relaxation on a picturesque vineyard. Take in this spectacularly full cultural experience with plenty of authentic wine, food, and history.
