Earlier this year, Madeira won the prize for the fifth time. Who on earth would imagine that a group of islands set on the top of a volcano, in the north-Atlantic, would have such a reputation? Well, how about all locals and tourists who have already visited Madeira? And for those who have yet to visit but have done some research: you must also know that these awards are very well-deserved.

Indeed, they are.

Neverending spring, with pleasant weather year-round. Constantly ideal water temperature, ranging from 17°C in the winter to 25°C in the summer. Jaw-dropping landscapes, with beautiful panoramic views of the Atlantic and spectacular volcanic rock formations. Rich fauna and flora, with species so unique that they can’t be found anywhere else on the globe. Madeira is a paradise, and below is a list of five good reasons – this time for real – why you should visit ASAP.

1 – Fantastic Climate

Unless you are among the 10% of the world population who lives in the southern hemisphere, you know that winter is coming. Nothing against the season. Autumn may bring the cold, but it also comes with beautiful colors. And having grown up as outdoor people (or simply as people who appreciate nature), we know how to enjoy ice-cold snow days. Still, a bit of light and warmth in the middle of chilly weather doesn’t hurt. A visit to Madeira is like a warm, relaxing hug for all visitors at any time of the year.

With evergreen and hardwood trees – that can reach up to 40 meters (130 ft) – the Larissilva is a unique type of subtropical forest that covers 20% of Madeira (15,000 hectares). The area also shelters diverse endemic species of animals, mainly birds and insects. Wonderful views guaranteed.

3 – Gorgeous Ocean

The water of the Madeira coast is so clear that visibility can reach up to 50 meters (165 ft) during the best days. Life also thrives in the underwater world, with diverse species of fish, octopus, turtles, and marine mammals swimming around. You can see all of them, just use your diving or snorkeling gear.

4 – Perfect Location

Madeira is perfect for everyone who loves the mild weather of spring or wants a break from the cold, but doesn’t want to travel too far south. It is only a two-hour flight away from Lisbon, the Portuguese capital.

5 – Amazing Outdoor activities

With all these wonders in only one place, it should be more than obvious why Madeira deserves to be called Europe’s Best Island Destination. The combo of fantastic scenery, diverse life, and good weather all year makes the archipelago the perfect place for every outdoor enthusiast.

You may be the kind of person looking for a relaxing place to enjoy your holiday, and that’s completely fine. Madeira will welcome you with open arms, beaches, and sunshine. And for those seeking thrills and discovery, Madeira’s got a long list of adventures that are ready for you 24/7.

Whether you are a beginner in whatever activity you’re interested in, or you’ve been an outdoor enthusiast as long as you can remember, you will find many things to do underwater, on firm land, or in the skies. Many schools, tours, and guides are ready to offer you a lifetime experience, with activities such as stand up paddleboarding, diving, mountain biking, trail running, climbing, paragliding and more. Now excuse me. I gotta run to close the window. It’s chilly, and I’ve got leaves floating in. Oh, autumn.
